Happy Fall! By Jennifer Neafcy, Assistant Principal
My family and I spent Saturday in the warm sunshine at Alki Beach, and then enjoyed probably the last outdoor meal on our deck for the season. On Sunday, we ended the weekend watching our daughter play soccer in the pouring cold rain. As great as Saturday was, I equally enjoyed the change in the weather on Sunday. Last week was the beginning of my favorite season of the year, fall. While there are aspects of each season that I enjoy, fall is the time of year that I look forward to. The temperature is cooler, but not too cold, it’s time to begin pulling out sweaters and scarves, plans are made to visit a pumpkin patch and to go on a fall foliage drive, and the hot cocoa canister takes a prominent place on the kitchen counter. I love this time of the year.
Fall also signals that we are several weeks into the school year, and that everyone is settling in. Our students have been busy meeting new friends, learning new routines and procedures, and getting back into the groove of doing schoolwork. Our staff has been getting back into the routine of planning engaging lessons, teaching, grading, and managing the classroom. We are reaching the part of the school year where everything is falling into place. The same can be said for me. This year, I have moved out of the classroom into administration with many new roles and responsibilities. One part of my job that I really enjoy is spending time in the classrooms and in the hallways. During this time, I have observed student interactions, students interacting with teachers, and some incredible learning taking place.
What a joy it is to serve at Hope with our staff, students, and families! I’m excited to see what this year brings!

Flood in Hope basement – ESC relocated
Over the weekend, the Hope campus sump pump’s motor failed, causing a flood in our lower floor including the fellowship hall, school library, kitchen, and K-5 extended care classroom. We have a professional crew drying it out and cleaning the spaces out, but prayers are appreciated for the continued sump pump fix and clean up of those spaces. Additionally, extended care programs for K-5 will be temporarily relocated per ESC director Christina Figgins’ emailed communication. Thank you for the prayers and flexibility.
COVID-19 Vaccination Status
If your child has been vaccinated for COVID-19, please send a screen shot or picture of their vaccination card to the Hope school office at office@hopeseattle.org. This will be important for contract tracing purposes as vaccinated individuals without symptoms do not need to quarantine after COVID-19 exposure, according to guidance from the Department of Health. Thank you!
Curriculum Night – Curriculum Outlines
Thank you to the many of you who joined us last week for curriculum night! We sent home curriculum outlines with middle school students last Tuesday, and are sending home curriculum outlines today to the other grades preschool through grade 5. These can also be accessed from the classroom webpages on our Hope website.
If you have any questions about curriculum, expectations, or anything else, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher or the school office.
COVID-19 Testing
Hope Lutheran School has been approved to be a test site for COVID-19 rapid tests. If you would like the reassurance of having a free rapid (15 minute) test, please fill out the permission slip sent home two weeks and return it to the school office. We will then test your child if we notice a COVID-19 symptom or we think your child may be a close contact of someone who tested positive for COVID-19. Please note we will contact you first if we plan to do a test. If your child tests negative but has COVID-19 symptoms, we will still need a full COVID-19 test prior to a return to campus. You may also access the permission slip here: Events & Covid19 Info | Hope Lutheran School
Hope Apparel Update
Thank you for ordering your Hope t-shirts or sweatshirts. The orders have been submitted. We realize that you are all anxiously awaiting your hoodies, and hope to have them in-hand soon. Expect that delivery won’t be for at least another 2-3 weeks. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
