Graduation by Roselyn Newton, 8th Grade Teacher
The end-of-year activities are consuming eighth graders because, of course, they are getting ready for graduation. There is so much for them to think about other than graduation. First there is the academic responsibility which must be conquered otherwise there will be no graduation. High school is also big on the students’ minds. They think about and worry a bit about friendships, school activities, academics, and acceptance. This is an unsettling time for them.
Recently, they chose their class verse. After much deliberation, better known as arguing, they chose Micah 6:8 for their graduation verse. It was a process, but one which characterized this class so well. This class has rarely reached a consensus because of its diversity. They are still learning how to listen and respect opinions without wanting to “deliberate.” It has been an entertaining class to teach. How can we forget the debate over the location of Nevada City? Is it really in California? What about how many states in our country? 50 or 51?
As loud as the “deliberations” became, this class will always be remembered for their generous support of the November food drives and their generous support of teachers. Their generosity is unsurpassed.
One area had no deliberation. That occurred when we were analyzing speeches made by Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert Kennedy, Barbara Jordan, and George Wallace on the subject of equality. The class spoke loudly and strongly about the importance of “equality for all.” No debate. It seemed fitting they should choose Micah 6:8 “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
This class has etched a spot in my memory which will never be erased. This class has made me a better teacher/person. I love them dearly.

Thank You Volunteers
It was a busy month with our Teacher Appreciation Week, Book Fair, and Grandparents Day. Thank you to all our parents volunteers for making these events special, especially for our Grandparents/Special Person Day. These are memories they cherish and then look forward to attending again year after year!
If any family did not get a chance to make a purchase or two from the book fair, there is still time to do so. You may shop online. Go to www.scholastic.com/bookfair/. From there you need to “find your fair.” You will see Hope Lutheran School is the list of available fairs. This option will be open to you through May 27.
Thank you everyone for your support of the fair. 50% of the sales will be returned to us to enable teachers to add books to their classroom libraries. We are so grateful for you.
Summer Camps Offered
We have a few flyers for summer camps to share with you. Come check out the display in the school main entrance lobby. These camps range from technology, reading, theatre and musical as well as our own Vacation Bible School and ESC summer camp.

Golf Tournament Update
If you missed the registration deadline there is still time to get yours in! We have 19 teams so far! Not a golfer but need those PIP hours? May 31st is not only the day of the tournament but the LAST day to get your PIP hours in for this year! I need volunteers to pick up bagels from Zatz, donuts from QFC (Alaska) and coffee from Starbucks as well as supervise competitions at specified holes on the course. It is sure to be tons of fun, full of laughs and friendly competitions. Email Sally Heit at sheit@hopeseattle.org or Brett Kapels at bkapels@hopeseattle.org if you can help out!
