Hope to Home Learning – Visual Art Literacy by Janet Manuta, Art Teacher
Our students have created so many amazing works of art this year. We hope you were able to enjoy the continually changing exhibits still adorning our hallways!
My focus this year has been to introduce the concept of “Visual Literacy” to all Hope Lutheran students, from K to 8th grade. My goal is to give them the opportunity to look at and talk about a variety of works of art, from classical to contemporary. Each week, as the classes come into the art room, I have a different visual on the board, under the words, “WHAT DO YOU SEE?” We spend a few minutes having very lively discussions about what they see, how it makes them feel, what techniques the artist used, what is the artists message, and any other topics that might evolve. Your children are learning how to be visual thinkers, how to use the “language of art” to describe what they see, and how to relate these discussions to their own works of art.
Artworks on display now include:
K – Mixed media collage based on the Eric Carle book, The Mixed Up Chameleon
1st – Castle Collages based on Swiss artist Paul Klee’s painting , “Castle and Sun”
2nd – Collage Interpretation of Henri Matisse’s painting, “Goldfish”
3rd – Whimsical cat watercolor paintings in the style of artist, Laurel Burch
4th – Coming Soon……. Paper cut out collages of People arranged in specific patterns
5th – Chalk pastel drawings of delicious sweets in the style of American artist, Wayne Thiebaud
Middle School Electives Classes – Drawings from Observation:
- Looking at an arrangement of about 5 marshmallows. Using a variety of drawing pencils and shade sticks to create a 3 – dimensional rendition of this soft edged, squishy object!
- Still Life Drawings where each table set up an interesting arrangement of objects to draw realistically. Students learned how to use the space of the paper to create a balanced composition of line, color, texture and shape.
- COMING SOON: multi-layered block prints with animal themes and Pop Art close up drawings of one of the Preschool tricycles!!
Now that we are going to school in our homes, I have posted my lessons online. K-5 will find art lessons on my web page in the Hope Lutheran site. All grades have their first 2 assignments. New lessons will be posted weekly. The Middle School art electives class work is posted in Schoology. These students are responsible for posting an image of each drawing they complete. I am happy to comment on each one, offer suggestions and answer questions. They will be graded as they are turned in to me.
My focus is still on “Visual Literacy” with a slight twist! I want and expect all students to become more aware of their environments, to notice the changes in nature and to have more opportunities to “draw from observation”. I encourage anyone who feels the need to draw and create more art than I’m asking for, to just do it, as doodling is also a great way to ease the mind and express yourself.
