The board of directors comprises representatives of the Hope Lutheran Church and School community. The board is responsible for establishing and clarifying the overall strategic direction of the church and school, setting high-level policies that govern the work of the church and school, ensuring the spiritual and financial health and sustainability of the organization, and encouraging the congregation and staff in their work.
Jason Grotelueschen, Chair – Jason and his wife, Beth, have been married for 21 years and have three children. They were Hope members for 13 years and were deeply involved in the church and school, with Jason serving on the worship leadership team including two years on staff as contemporary music director, Beth serving as PTH president, and their two oldest kids attending Hope School. The family then moved to Omaha for four years, where Jason served as a worship/music leader and confirmation/youth facilitator, and the family is now in the process of returning to Seattle. Jason has worked for 25 years as a project manager, product marketer and editor for tech companies and media businesses, he also does freelance work for a local community news website. Jason was raised on a farm in rural Nebraska, grew up in an Lutheran Church Missouri Synod school and church founded in the 1870s, and has deep family roots in church and educational leadership. The Grotelueschen family recently transferred their membership back to Hope.
Wayne Machmiller, Vice Chair – Wayne and his wife, Terese, have been married for 30 years and have two adult children who both grew up at Hope Church benefiting from the youth programs offered. Wayne is a Seattle native who attended the University of Washington, graduating with an Industrial Design degree along with a focused study in architecture. Wayne has actively been involved at Hope Church in various ways including serving on the Building Committee, on the MAT Property Team having participated on a myriad of building projects, on the Celebrate Recovery Leadership Team, and has served on the Board of Directors for 3 years, currently Vice Chairman. Wayne is currently Director of Resort Renovation and Design at a large vacation property company. In his free time Wayne enjoys spending time with his family and cheering on the Huskies!
Peter (Pete) Renn, Secretary – Pete and his wife, Lisa, have been married for 25 years this August and have two sons. Pete has been a member of Hope Lutheran Church, off and on, since 1980 and is a graduate of Hope School and Seattle Lutheran High School. A proud graduate of Concordia – Nebraska, he served as a Lutheran church worker for 24 years and taught in schools in Southern California and Las Vegas. He was principal of Hope School from 2001–2007 and led the school to attain its initial accreditation through the National Lutheran School Accreditation process. Prior to returning to Seattle in 2016, Pete was a faculty member at Concordia University Chicago where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in education and served as the international director for the campus. He currently serves as an assistant dean in the School of Education at Seattle Pacific University.
Eric Mueller, Treasurer – Eric and his wife, Christine, have been married nearly 15 years and have been members of Hope since 2012. Their son, Spencer, is an acolyte and a graduate of Hope School. After graduating from the University of California, Davis, Eric served 25 years in the U.S. Navy as a Naval Flight Officer and retired in 2010. He is now a pilot with a major airline. His leadership experience includes commanding officer tours in the Navy and vestry positions at Episcopal churches in Monterey and Seattle. Chris has a lifelong affiliation with Hope and for the past four years Eric has served Hope by changing the messages on the church marquee.
