After School Fun by Audrey Figgins, ESC Teacher
During my past 6 months as the extended school care lead teacher for Hope, I have found the most wonderful place to work and call home. Though I have been a member of Hope Church my whole life and have been involved in our school programs in many ways, I have never felt more of a calling to join than when I began helping out in ESC this year.
Our crew of kids, ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade, has used our time together to try anything from puppet theatres to paper mache volcanic science experiments! Surprises occurred: 4th and 5th graders loved puppet decoration, and kindergartens couldn’t get enough of learning about chemical reactions with baking soda and vinegar. Your kids inspire me!
A typical day in extended care looks like an hour of outside play time to start. You link up with friends, tell Ms. Audrey (myself) about your class assignments, your weekends, and ask her why she dyed her hair for the 10th time already. Our troop heads inside right after to snack and pray – braver souls than I volunteer their hands for such things as “the Norway, Superman, the Lord’s Prayer” or something entirely unique like “The nugget prayer” with a dab or floss dance at the end of course. Once we have all composted our snack bowls and given Ms. Audrey puppy eyes in hopes of a third helping of snack- fun ensues!
Board games are flung out, art stations are thriving with beaded bracelets, emoji drawings, and paper planes. These small fragments of the day that I get to see your kids feel empowered, fight for their ideas, hangout with their best friends, and even tell me they love me sometimes give me hope for an amazing future to come. I’m so proud to be able to help them with homework, teach them how to communicate their feelings when talking to friends and meet their amazing parents.
One of my favorite things that I saw in ESC this year was telling all 20 or so kids that I had been accepted into UW for Spring- to which they put up little W’s with their hands for a picture. Some even wore UW sweatshirts and other Husky attire to school that week to congratulate me! I have made plans to finish out the year at Hope while starting school because it’s been such a pleasure to teach and learn from our ESC kids I couldn’t leave since we’ve become a little family. I’m grateful for all our silly, wild, and snack filled afternoons together, sometimes with the karaoke machine echo on a bit too loud but we love them anyway.
