Creating Community by Sally Heit, Admissions Director
The word community has been on my mind these past few weeks; primarily, I’ve thinking about how belonging to a community, whether it is in a group, city, neighborhood, church or school, gives you a feeling of being a part of something bigger than yourself. Life-long friendships are made, traditions are created, births and deaths are celebrated and honored, legacies are carried on, and lives are enriched when we are part of a larger community.
Like many of us, I spent this past Saturday running errands. It seemed that everywhere I went, I ran into someone I knew from a different community that I was a part of: MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers), the YMCA, Dream Dinners, Hope, and Seattle Lutheran High School. Although it is very tiresome to my kids who have to wait for me while I chat and get caught up with these friends, what I find so intriguing is that these communities of people are so intertwined with each other, like interlocking circles. It is fascinating to see how our paths cross with each other at different times in our lives.
Hope and Seattle Lutheran High School are great examples of shared community. At the Seattle Lutheran High School auction on Saturday night, two older women from different families spoke to me about how their kids, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren in one case had attended Hope and Seattle Lutheran Schools, and how important these two communities were to their families. Multiple generations attend the schools and have even become teachers or staff at the schools! At Hope, that has happened as well with current preschool teacher Mairi Seraile and second grade teacher Nancy Tagge graduating from Hope and then returning to serve here as teachers.
When parents look for the “right fit” in a school for their student, often times they are not only looking for academic excellence, extracurricular activities, and faith, but also a place where they will belong and make those life-long connections. On November 13 we’ll welcome new families to our All School Open House. Invite families you know to join us in showing what it looks like to belong to our incredible community at Hope, which has been going strong for almost 60 years!
