Thank you Sonjia Barker! By Kristen Okabayashi
I would like to dedicate this newsletter to our outgoing Parents and Teachers of Hope’s fearless leader Sonjia Barker. For those of you who are not active in PTH, Sonjia has led our parents’ organization over the past several years. She has changed the culture of PTH from functioning as primarily a fundraising organization, to being a community building organization that also fundraises for the school.
PTH now focuses on a couple of large fundraisers, and then the other events are geared towards small fundraising but primarily community building. Over the past couple of years, these events have included a daddy/daughter dance, parent speakers, the annual Fall Frolic, and a middle school dance.
Sonjia has recruited a strong team of PTH board members who help her with all the many events that PTH hosts. From the back to school BBQ to teacher appreciation week in May and everything in between, Sonjia has created a group of volunteers who tireless serve our students, our teachers, and our school. And, she is a joy and a pleasure to work with in addition to being highly organized.
While Sonjia could not achieve all that she has without assistance from others, I just want to give her a huge thank you and recognition of the amazing work she has done for our school. And, what is incredible about her also is that instead of exiting quickly and running in the opposite direction after serving for so long, she is instead co-chairing the management of our scrip program next year.
While we have told Sonjia thank you, if you see her, please share your thanks as well. She is a gem!

Needed – Gently Used Items
My name is Michele Olson and I work in our preschool program at Hope. A friend of mine provides after school care for two young girls from a family who is currently homeless. The dad just got a job so my friend is helping them find affordable housing. She is looking for bikes or scooters and other fun summer games and art supplies that they could use. If you or anyone you know has outgrown or no longer using things these girls might like, I will be happy to bring them to her. The girls are currently in kindergarten and 4th grade in Bellevue. You could drop off any items in the school office. Thank you!
