Art Class Update: Donations and Volunteers Welcome! By Luz Bratcher, Art Teacher
I’m Luz Bratcher, your child’s art teacher, affectionately known as Mrs. B. It’s my first year at Hope and it’s been a delight working with your wonderful children.
One of the unique things about my role is I get to shape our class projects to our students. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed learning about their interests, how they express themselves, and what kind of developmental growth I can help nurture through creativity. This term, we’re diving into textile arts and crafts: sewing, needlework, weaving, crochet, and knitting. We’re aiming to bolster fine motor skills, concentration, and connect with our personal histories.
My own textile journey started with learning to knit while studying at L’Abri in Switzerland and has recently included exploring Mexican embroidery as a way to connect with my heritage. As someone who is neurodivergent, I’ve found textile arts incredibly beneficial for managing anxiety and enhancing focus. I’m thrilled to introduce your children to this art form, offering them creative ways to explore their interests and develop emotionally and mentally.
We’re mostly set for supplies, but there’s a few things we could use in the classroom:
- Thread. Extra spools of sewing thread or embroidery floss is helpful.
- Fabric scraps. If you’ve got a scrap bin, send it our way.
- Old clothes + unpaired socks. Any non-knit clothing (like t-shirts) that we can turn into scrap fabric and socks to make dolls and puppets.
- Clothing that needs light repair (grades 2-5 only). Items that have small holes, areas that can be patched, frayed edges, etc. will be used for a future visible mending project.
- Stories! If your family has a special connection to textile arts, such as a tradition or a special technique that’s unique to your family culture, I’d love to know and incorporate it into our projects. Or if you would like to do a demonstration or do a show and tell, please let me know!
- Volunteers: I’m also looking for volunteers during art classes on Mondays and Thursdays.
Looking forward to a vibrant term of creativity and growth!

Chapel Offerings
The chapel offering is collected during our weekly Wednesday chapels. Students will find offering envelopes in the weekly Yellow Envelopes.
For the months of March and April, offerings will go to Heifer International. Heifer International is on a mission to end hunger and poverty in a sustainable way by supporting and investing alongside local farmers and their communities. It begins with a seed investment of livestock or agriculture, followed by mentorship to help project participants build a business, and ultimately gain access to supply chains and markets. Some of the livestock that can be purchased are heifers, goats, sheep, chicks, and honeybees. We have set a goal of $500 to purchase a heifer. Any additional offerings will be used to purchase additional animals.
