WOH For Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019

Art Creation by Janet Manuta, Art Teacher

Throughout the school year, our students have been incredibly creative and have produced some amazing works of art!   I hope you are enjoying the ongoing display of their artwork in our school hallways.

Coming up next you will see that our Kindergarten and 1st grade have been introduced to the art of printmaking! Both classes started with a “Finger-paint Monoprint”, where they used all parts of their hands to draw lines into the paint and then lift off one print onto another paper. The following week they used a pencil to draw into Styrofoam sheets, then used printing ink and a brayer to create their first (of many) prints in a series.

Our second graders just finished their “Hot Cup of Chocolate” collages which are now on display. This week they learned about the art of Jim Dine and his love of heart themed art.   They are creating a multi-media painting.

Be on the lookout for “polar bears in the snow” paintings by our 3rd graders and “Agamographs” by our 4th graders, which are drawn images that change as you walk past them.

In 5th grade, we inter-related art and math as students learned how to use needle and thread to make straight lines appears to curve. They will be on display next week. Our next project will be a drawing based on the art of Mexican Artist, Romero Britto. Colors will pop!

In the Middle School Art Electives class, students completed a unit on Still Life Drawing, using a technique of layering many different materials into one finished painting. Ask your child how this was accomplished. We moved onto 3-D Relief Sculptures based on the art of Frank Stella, using mat board scraps cut into asymmetrical geometric shapes, painted with tempera and acrylics. We are thankful to Dave Gehring, beloved Hope Lutheran Church congregant, for sharing his amazing Block Prints with the Art Elective class and donating a printing press to the school! His lifelong experience as a printmaking artist added a new dimension to this lesson.

Many of these art pieces from our 5th-8th graders will be sent to L.E.S.T. to represent our school. The list can be seen outside the art room and middle school hallway. These works of art will most likely WOW everyone who sees them!

Music Program News

For the past few weeks, our K-5th grade music classes have been creating their own original electronic music songs. Hope School is excited to share these songs with you. Here is the link: https://soundcloud.com/hopeseattle

Mr. Franklin created these songs using the Korg Gadget app on an iPad. The app was projected onto the whiteboard so every student could see exactly how the music was being created. We then went around the room several times and each student was asked to select a note that belonged to the particular scale we were using. Students also chose the beats for kick drum, snare drum, and hi hats. Mr. Franklin chose the tempos, synthesizer sounds, and effects. He also added/subtracted/changed some notes and beats to make the songs more coherent and flow more smoothly. The students were very engaged and excited to create their own songs. Each class repeatedly asked to listen to the other grades’ songs as well.
