Hope Students On The Move – East Coast Trip 2023 by Sara Kunkel, Middle School Teacher
On April 29th, Hope students and chaperones landed in our nation’s capital, Washington DC. One of the many activities was touring the Capitol Building and learning about all of the important events that have taken place there. We also visited several war memorials to remember lives lost for freedom. We were in awe as we honored important historical figures at the Lincoln, Jefferson and Martin Luther King, Jr memorials.
After DC, we traveled to Gettysburg to tour battlefields and learn about this pivotal battle. Students and chaperones alike found that history came alive being present at these historical sites with our tour guide Alex asking for us to give him his “two minutes” to listen.
Then, it was time to head to New York City for a Broadway show, Wall Street, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (along with many other highlights). We all learned how to ride the subway and experienced first hand how important it is to “stay to the right” when walking on New York streets.
There were more stories than I could possibly share but the greatest takeaway for me was how our group came together as a family. The students helped one another, the adults stepped in to fill in where needed and enjoyed the experience. I am grateful for the adventure, I will forever appreciate our experience together and we will ALL remember to “stay to the right, stay to the right. Give me my two minutes. You hear me?”
