Teaching Kindness through Creepy Critters by Lisa Richardson, 5th Grade Teacher
Back in January, the 5th graders received their first living creatures in science, mealworms. Yup, those gross, squirmy pests people find in their flours and cereals. At first, the students were a bit apprehensive and several refused to even touch them. I explained to the class that we would be observing the life cycle changes of this “worm” over the next few months. During this time, students would need to measure, illustrate, and provide a nurturing environment where their living creatures would flourish. They also learned that the mealworm was actually not a worm at all, but actually was the larval stage of the Darkling Beetle.
After the first week or so, many of the mealworms began molting—a good sign that they were growing. This excited many students but also caused a few to cringe. Several were still wary to touch their mealworms and observe the newly shed skins. Still, everyone continued to nurture their mealworms’ environment and more shedding ensued. Finally, after about 3 weeks, we had our first pupa form. The students were amazed.
Pupas are incredible when you think about it. One day we had something that looked just like a worm and the next day we had an alien life form that looked nothing like its previous form. Even more miraculous was what was taking place inside the pupa. During the pupa stage, the meal worm’s cells completely start to transform. The former larva changes into a soupy mess inside it’s pupa!
As a class we discussed how even the smallest of God’s creatures are actually amazing miracles and in order to grow, they all have to go through some major changes. Some of them are easy to observe but others are mysterious and often messy. Without these changes, we cannot become who God intended us to become.
As soon as our first darkling beetle emerged, this became obvious. The students could not believe the changes that occurred inside their pupas. They were the proud parents of beautiful, shiny, dark, adult beetles. They rejoiced! I know this sounds crazy, but I cannot describe any other words. They picked up their beetles, held them, talked to them and shared them with their peers. Suddenly, these creepy critters that used to gross them out had become their beloved pets. By nurturing them with, care and patience, these little creatures taught a class of 5th graders about the power of kindness.
