Real World 101 by Kristen Okabayashi, Principal
This trimester, I’m teaching an elective I’ve been thinking about for at least two years, which we’ve called “Real World 101”. While Hope graduates typically do very well in high school, I’ve often thought about what types of skills students will need to function in the real world, and my list of ideas could easily last an entire school year. That being said, I’ve condensed down my ideas to what I think are the most important, and this trimester I’m excited to try it out with a group of middle school students.
So far, the students and I have talked about what’s important in selecting a high school, and how that could be different from person to person. Then, we talked about potential careers, and took some career testing quizzes to help get the students thinking about what they are interested in, what they have aptitude for, and what kind of education they will need to obtain those kinds of jobs. Up next, students will learn about personal finance, including saving and budgeting, basics of credit and debt, investing, more on education and careers, global economics, and marketing/consumerism. For this longer unit, we will use a wonderful series called “Foundations in Personal Finance”, partially written by well-known finance trainer Dave Ramsey. I also have some surprises in store for the students relating to real world skills so I won’t share about that yet.
It’s a joy to teach these students and I look forward to what they learn about themselves through this class.
