Fall Sports by Brett Kapels, Athletic Director and 6th grade homeroom
“To me, teamwork is the beauty of our sport, where you have five acting as one. You become selfless.” –Mike Krzyzewski
Five years ago I remember making the comment to someone, “In five years, Hope Lutheran is going to be the best school in West Seattle.” I am not sure what criteria there is to make that judgment but I truly feel blessed to be a part of the family atmosphere that has been established here. When hearing other schools in our league talking about struggling with enrollment and being able to field teams, Hope tends to be on the other side where our teams are almost to the point we could field two teams. The relationships that are formed in being part of a team make it more desirable to play sports. Just like anything else, our teams start with the great leadership our coaches bring. If you have a chance, please thank these amazing coaches for their time and efforts this fall:
Volleyball: Jen Rice and Sally Heit
Cross Country: Sharman McAllister and Cara Marion
Flag Football: Larry Marion
Have you heard of Hope Lutheran Athletics? There is some serious talent in this school, and it is displayed on a regular basis. This fall our Volleyball team capped off their season with great showings in the League and Peace Tournaments. As the season progressed, they became more familiar with one another and the level of play was raised. They ended up winning their pool in the League tournament. Our Flag Football team had a great year, going 6-1. Once again it came down to a nail biter between us and Parkland Lutheran for the championship. It was a hard fought game that came down to the final drive, but we are proud of our boys. Cross Country continued their hot streak from last year as Hope was able to recapture the league championship and come home with the banner. You can find that banner hanging in our hallway for its third straight year!
As we move forward into the next sports season we reflect back on the ups and downs and in everything we did, we learn from it to make ourselves better for the seasons to come. If you did not have a chance to catch an event, please take the time this season. Hope is blessed to have great students, who also happen to be blessed as athletes too.
