A Place For Everyone

by Erika Alba, Middle School and Music Specialist

I wear many hats here at Hope. I  teach middle school math and technology, and travel to the Main campus for music for grades 4-8. Walking back and forth between two campuses does have its advantages, as I easily clock 10,000 steps by 1:00 PM and enjoy the sunshine (when there is some), and call the sanctuary at the Main Campus one of my classrooms.

Four days a week, I am lucky enough to teach two of the most meaningful classes I have ever taught, Chapel Leadership and Chapel Worship Band – and believe it or not – they’re electives! These classes are not only practically useful for modern day worship, but lead students to be of service in ways that allow them to use their gifts in meaningful ways.

Chapel Leadership and Chapel Worship Band are electives that show students that there is a place for everyone in worship. In Chapel Leadership, students run the sound board, lights, and presentation slides. They prepare the worship service slides and often serve as scripture readers. These students take on real responsibilities and gain valuable technical skills, confidence, and problem-solving experience. In Chapel Worship Band, students learn to play together as a team while leading worship for our school community. They practice songs, learn how to listen to one another, and discover that worship is about more than performing- it’s about helping others connect with God.

What I love most about teaching these electives is watching students realize that there really is a place for everyone in worship. Some students are comfortable on stage with their instrument or microphone. Others would rather be behind the scenes making sure everything runs smoothly. Both roles are equally important. And honestly, watching students grow in their faith through these electives is pretty amazing to witness how God is at work.
