WOH For October 25, 2016
The Great Shake Out by Kristen Okabayashi, Principal
Last Thursday, Hope Lutheran School participated in the international “Great Shake Out” by having an earthquake drill at 10:20 on 10-20. In joining in the earthquake drill, students and staff were part of an estimated 21.4 million people in the United States and 54.8 million people globally to “drop, cover, and hold”. For more information and safety information for individuals, families, organizations, and communities, visit their website at http://www.shakeout.org/home.html.
About two weeks ago, the fire department also visited us to check for fire safety, and as part of their visit we implemented a fire drill. Our students and staff had already practiced a fire drill closer to the beginning of the year, so our students “aced” the drill and the fire fighters especially commented on how quiet and orderly our students were as they exited the building. And that of course is why we practice drills – so if there was an actual emergency, our students (and staff) would not panic and we would know what to do.
In addition to the Great Shake Out drill and the two fire drills so far, throughout the year we practice different types of possible lockdowns and a shelter-in-place drill, in addition to another earthquake drill this spring and two more fire drills. Clearly we hope we never have to use these drills in real life, but it is so crucial to practice just in case.
