WOH For Tues., Jan. 30, 2018
Power of One Assembly by Kristen Okabayashi
Monday, K-8 students were part of assemblies broken up by age level regarding raising awareness of being mean and bullying. Performed by Soren Bennick Productions, two actors led us through the process of identifying what bullying is (and is not), types of bullying, and role plays of bullying situations. The actors also led the students through how to handle situations as the person who is being mean, the person who is the target, and the bystanders. I personally was really touched by the actors themselves, who took the time to answer questions and clearly had a heart for promoting this information! If you have any questions please let us know, and feel free to find more information on their website as well. http://www.sorenbennick.com/power_of_one.html
Here is a recap of the assembly:
The Introduction – actors dialogue with the audience to work out a definition of bullying which includes 1) hurtful, 2) purposeful, and 3) repeated behaviors by one person towards another where the intent is to cause harm and isolation. The actors then acted out skits to include different scenarios including physical bullying, exclusion bullying, and for the older students, cyber bullying. There is then a bystander scenario where the five students become involved and first the bystanders are not helpful, but then the scene is reworked to include bystanders who stand up for the target. To end the performance, the actors bring out the Power of One pledge poster board that has the Power of One Anti-Bullying Oath printed on it. The poster is then presented to the school and together, the actors and the audience take the oath. I thought it was very meaningful for our students!
