In the education field, teachers have a variety of assessments that they use to measure students. These assessments help us understand if we as teachers are teaching what we think we are teaching, and if students are learning what we think they are learning. It’s important that students know not just subject content, but also work on skills such as critical thinking, analyzing information, and making inferences.
At Hope, some of the assessments we utilize include diagnostic assessments (for example pre-tests for knowledge, self-assessments), formative assessments (questions and answers, observations and in class activities, quizzes during a learning unit), and summative assessments (tests and exams, final projects, portfolios). As parents, you will see some of the outcomes of these assessments when students bring home graded tests, projects, and book reports, for example.
Today, teachers will send home Trimester 1 report cards, which are a detailed opportunity for students and parents to see how students are learning. In our K-5 grades, two years ago we adopted standards-based report cards, which show how well a particular student is demonstrating a wide variety of skills in each subject. Developed to match state and national standards, each student will receive a numerical grade from 1-4 depending on their demonstrated skill achievement in each standard. The 1-4 grading scale is not comparable to a letter grading scale; at this point in the year, a score of 2 in a particular standard is a strong score. As move closer to the end of the school year, we hope to see more “3” scores. The idea behind implementation of this standards-based report card is to show exactly what skills the student has achieved, and which skills they need to work on still.
In middle school, we have adopted a letter grade report card, with a lengthy narrative. As students prepare to make the transition to high school, we decided it was important to still retain a letter grade, but we include the narrative to let parents know what was worked on as a class, and how each particular student is showing skill development in that subject area.
As you look through report cards, please let your child’s teacher know if you have any questions, and thank you to our teachers who spend so much time on these detailed reports.

Parent Involvement Program (PIP) Statements
Your 1st trimester PIP statements are being sent home today. Any hours submitted through December 10 will be recorded on your statement. The program year runs through May 31st of each year. Last Hope School Christmas Performance
Hope’s middle school musicians will perform in our annual “Sounds of Winter” concert tomorrow Wednesday, December 12 at 7:00 PM. The concert will feature our middle school chapel band and choir, handbell choir, and glee club performing with the Seattle Lutheran High School choir. We hope you can join us for our last festive event held in the Hope Church sanctuary. Merry Christmas!
Christmas Spirit Dress-Up Days – Dec. 13-19
Your Student Council is hosting a fun week of spirit dress up days! Please note that if you chose not to participate on these days school uniforms must be worn.
Thursday Dec.13 – Holiday socks & tights (worn with your school uniform)
Friday Dec.14 – Holiday hats, antlers, headbands (worn with your school uniform)
Monday Dec.17-“Merry Monday Morning”- come to school in your winter pjs like its Christmas morning!

Re-Enrollment for Fall 2019 – January 14-21
Christmas break will fly by and before we know it, it will be time to re-enroll for the fall 2019! Re-enrollment will begin January 14th to the 21st for currently enrolled families. You will receive more information on our online re-enrollment process the second week of January. On January 28, 2019 we will begin processing new applications from the community. Extended School Care & Sand Dollar Club Closures
Please note that our Extended School Care and Sand Dollar Club will be closed during Christmas/New Year’s break starting Thursday, December 20 through Tuesday, January 2, 2019. Both programs will resume on Wednesday, January 3, 2019.

Pacific Science Center Van: Assistance is needed with our Pacific Science Center van on Tuesday, January 15th. This can be a ½ or full day commitment. Two volunteers are needed to help students through the exhibit area and 2 volunteers with our Planetarium. Will need help at the end of the day to load everything up.
