Never Underestimate a Preschooler! By Christina Figgins, Preschool Teacher and Director
My job as a preschool teacher is to set the stage for play-based learning. I move furniture, rotate toys, and create centers that are based on literacy, science, math, and dramatic play. My intention is to invite the students to play and explore. The interesting thing is that I often have ideas of how the play should look and what they will learn from the structure of the classroom. BUT, I am always surprised and amazed at how the kids use the space and the toys. They know how to completely immerse themselves immediately!
Before Christmas break we had a center set up as the stable in Bethlehem where baby Jesus was born. The kids worked at the Bethlehem Inn and told Mary and Joseph that all the rooms were full. They wore costumes and cared for baby Jesus and even pretended to be the animals in the stable. We read several books at circle time learning about the story of Jesus’ birth. We sang songs and put on a Christmas program. The word “Emmanuel” came up in our stories and in our Christmas program songs. I told the kids what it meant a few times just to let them know. I told them, but didn’t think they grasped the idea of what it truly meant. I don’t think I even truly grasped the idea of what it meant. During one of our last circle times we were wrapping up the day with a Christmas song and one of kids raised her hand and said, “Emmanuel was in that song, and I know what it means. It means God with us.” And she had such a big smile on her face! All the kids nodded and agreed that this was true. I was overcome! Seeing this joy through their eyes and this acceptance changed me. And now I truly know the meaning of Emmanuel – God with us!
This month we will learn about nocturnal animals and the night sky. We will learn about bats and how they use echolocation to find their food and to watch out for predators. These are pretty big words and complex concepts, but they can handle it. They embrace it, act it out and have fun learning about it. And I will get to learn from these 3 and 4 year olds myself how to see the world in a different way, in a way that is more honest and pure.
