Tribute to a Life of Service by Mary Norton, 3rd Grade Teacher
Romans 12:5-7
5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your [a] faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach.
On June 9, we will celebrate the retirement of one who is called to use her gifts to teach, inspire, and create music. People often ask teachers, “Why do you want to teach?” and teachers often ask kids, “What do you want to be when you are older?”
Second grade teacher Nancy Tagge knows the answer to the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” She wanted to be a teacher. Her inspiration came from her grandfather and great-grandfather; they were teachers and musicians in the Lutheran Church. As Lutheran teachers, we feel the call to teach and share the good news of Jesus to young hearts and minds. Nancy Tagge has been the good and faithful servant for an incredible 42 years!
I am amazed at her ability to remember names of former students and their families. Her teaching comes from a heart in tune with students and advocating for what is best. Nancy has worked with many teachers, educational trends, and curriculum. She meets each challenge with wisdom and grace.
Both of my daughters were Nancy’s students and I appreciate her ability to recognize the individuality of each one. I will never forget one of my first chapels as a new teacher at Hope. She was playing a processional on the organ at full stop. Every head turned around to watch and listen to the majestic and stirring music.
We thank Nancy for her service to our school. We thank Nancy for sharing the saving grace of Jesus Christ. We thank Nancy for her dedication to our families and students. We thank Nancy for being a ministry member of our staff.
I thank Nancy for her time with my own children and for being my friend and colleague. I thank Nancy for stirring my heart with music. I thank Nancy for using her gifts. Blessings to Ms. Tagge as she embarks on a new journey and a new path as a good and faithful servant.
