Middle School Electives by Tim Allen, Middle School Teacher
One of the most enjoyable parts of my day is teaching electives to students and introducing them to something that I am passionate about! This year, I am teaching 3 different electives – 2 technology focused and 1 athletics focused that I know the students really enjoy, and are a great end to my day as well.
First trimester, I taught a STEM elective for the first time and it was a blast. Students learned all about the many different aspects of engineering, how to solve problems, and the art of 3D printing. Some of the challenges we tackled were building towers out of noodles, competed in an egg drop competition off the roof, and designed some awesome 3D designs that were printed to take home.
Second trimester, I am teaching a dedicated 3D printing elective where students are learning the ins and outs of 3D printers, how they work, what makes a design printable vs not, and also learning about a free educational website (www.tinkercad.com), where they can painlessly create amazing designs from scratch. This trimester, I have already printed the great state of Nebraska for a student, a Christmas ornament, a pig, and multiple other fun things.
Third trimester, I will be teaching a disc golf elective which is personally my favorite elective I have ever taught. I have played disc golf recreationally since college and just a few years ago started playing in some amateur tournaments around the PNW. With that elective, I get to teach students the fundamentals of throwing a disc golf disc (yes, they are very different than a traditional frisbee), teach them the physics behind how the discs fly, and show them how fun of a sport it can be.
With all of these electives, my hope is to introduce the students to a fun and engaging topic and allow them to see the plethora of options there are for when they are ready to move on from here at Hope. They could be an engineer, graphic designer, or even a professional disc golfer, and I am very proud that they have the opportunity to be introduced to these topics here at Hope!
