How Smart are First Graders? By Jennifer Revis, First Grade Teacher
Are you familiar with Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences? This theory is based on the idea that all people have eight distinct types of intelligence and that all people have varying levels within each type. Gardner identifies these eight types of intelligence as: logical-mathematical, linguistic, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, naturalist, intra-personal and interpersonal.
This idea, that all people are intelligent in many ways, is principal in facilitating the growth and development of children. In our classroom, students explore all the ways they are “Smart”. To make the idea more accessible, we describe the types of intelligence in words they can connect with and understand: logic smart, word smart, picture smart, music smart, body smart, nature smart, people smart and self-smart. We also take time to reflect on how we are spiritually smart.
The first graders know that they are “Smart” in all these ways and are given time to reflect on and discuss their strengths and weaknesses within each type. This idea is more than a lesson. It is a way for them to view themselves as people and learners. We often revisit and discuss the ways we are intelligent and how that constantly changes as we learn and grow. We are learning that our strengths and weaknesses can ebb and flow, but with practiced perseverance, we can keep growing in ways we did not even imagine. Watching children embrace their gifts, achieve new heights, and demonstrate grit is one of the greatest blessings of being a teacher. I thank God for the “Smarts” he gives us, and I pray that the students we teach today will one day use their sharp minds and kind hearts to make the world a better place.
Pictured: When these students began first grade, they did not rate themselves as being very “word smart”. They have since discovered that reading books and writing stories is what they enjoy most during our literacy time block.
