LEST 2025 by Kristen Okabayashi, Principal

The annual Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament (LEST) in Tacoma was wonderful as usual! You all received Hope’s awards letter last Tuesday and we will honor our participants tomorrow after chapel.

This year, Hope students particularly demonstrated their gifts and talents in the academic events. Our students won 3 out of 4 spelling bees, in grades 5 (Natalie), 6 (Mary), and 8 (Kaysen)! Each grade of spelling had between 13-16 participants from other schools so I was really impressed with our students’ ability both to spell, and to remain calm in front of a large audience. Two of our writers, in grades 7 (Ashlyn) and 8 (Josie), won blue ribbons and were additionally selected as “Most Promising Writers”  for their grades. Our 8th grade math participant, Michael, also won the math event. Congratulations to all these students!

A personal LEST highlight for me was seeing our students challenge themselves to compete in the dance event. The dance group was sort of a “grass roots” team of sorts, with mostly inexperienced dancers coming from the dance elective offered by Hope parent Alissa Moor during the first trimester. Students enjoyed this elective so much that they decided to continue practicing before and after school even after the elective ended in November, and competed with their dance routine at LEST. Out of all the schools, they ended up taking second place with a beautiful dance performance! I saw students pushing themselves outside their comfort zone, which I love to see.

Thank you to the many fans who came to cheer our students on at LEST!
