Opening Lines by Mary Norton, 3rd Grade Teacher
“On a dark and stormy night.” Charles M. Schulz
“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.” JRR Tolkien
“Call me Ishmael” Herman Melville
“It was night again. The Waystone Inn lay in silence, and it was a silence of three parts.” Patrick Rothfuss
Sometimes I am struck by an opening line and sometimes that first line becomes famous. And some are not so famous. I know authors that work weeks and even months to get that first line just right knowing that the success of a story depends on grabbing the reader’s interest. As the story develops and characters come to life, the reader is hooked.
Third graders are ripe for becoming imaginative readers. As one third grader said last week, “it’s like a movie in my mind”. So how do we as parents and teachers turn on the movie in the mind? I love to talk about the books I am reading. I let my students’ know my frustrations with characters and even the authors that kill main characters or plots that never move. We read books aloud in class with expression and emotion. I have been known to shed a tear at the happy and sad parts of the story. At our school, we are blessed to have teachers with collections of books and reading materials to inspire and motivate students to read. There are picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, magazines and digital devices to read.
As parents and teachers we can set the example to be a lifelong reader. One of my best memories is of my mother sitting under a glowing lamp on the chair in the corner, reading a newspaper or her Bible. She hardly read a fiction book, but the act of reading was one of ritual and comfort. We can talk about books and stories and read, read, read, to turn on the movie in our mind.

SCHOOL NEWS
Aloha Auction Mahalo
Aloha and Mahalo: We would like to thank you for all the support and helping us Reach Beyond the Horizon at our Aloha Auction last Saturday, March 8th! What an amazing, beautiful, fun and great night! We will announce the funds raised soon! We have been working hard to audit and ensure all items are accounted for. Preliminary Receipts were emailed after the auction. Credit cards will be charged this week along with an emailed Final Receipt. Mahalo (thank you) for your patience! -Hope PTH
A HUGE THANK YOU to our outstanding PTH parent group and parents who worked tirelessly to host one of the best auctions yet! The energy was pumping, the online bidding was intense, and bid cards were raised in support of PTH and Hope School. We have to give a big shout out to President, Melanie Fukumoto and Vice President, Lisa Averiett, for their leadership, creativity and tireless late nights spent making Saturday night so special which included special touches like hand-delivered leis from Hawaii (thank you Todd!), beautiful native flower arrangements by Hope parent, Kiera Silva and Akemi Sakaida, desserts that showcased the flavors of the Islands, and decor that made you feel you were in a tropical paradise instead of Seattle in the middle of March. There are too many volunteers to name who worked hard to support PTH and Hope, and we are truly grateful. This is Melanie’s last year as President as her son, Bryson, will graduate. It will be hard to say goodbye to such a dynamic leader, and we are grateful for her service and leadership.
Auction Lost & Found
A pair of red and pink glasses with a grey case have been turned into the office that were found at the auction/ There is also a Hope North Campaign coffee tumbler that was found and is in the office.
St. Patrick’s Spirit Dress Day – St. Patrick’s Day is on Monday, March 17. Students are invited to wear green or St. Patrick’s Day themed clothing that day. Students not participating should wear the regular school uniform.
Chapel Offerings – For the months of March and April, offerings will go to World Vision to purchase farm animals. Nearly 1 in 10 people in the developing world don’t have enough to eat. We can support these families by purchasing livestock that will be given to rural farmers in developing countries to use to feed themselves and to build a business as a way to pull themselves out of the cycle of poverty. With the goal of $535, Hope will be able to purchase a total of 16 farm animals to be donated to a family farm. Any additional offerings will be used to purchase additional animals.
Admissions
Hope is excited to announce that we are partnering with ParentPulse, a company that specializes in collecting feedback for schools, all in an effort to make this an even better place for your child and your family. You can learn more by watching a 60-second video.
