Summer Learning: Growing Brains All Season Long! By Leah Evjen-Bryan, Resource Specialist
As summer approaches, we’re all looking forward to sunshine, relaxation, and fun. But did you know that summer is also a perfect time to keep young minds active and growing? A little learning each day can go a long way toward preventing the “summer slide” and setting students up for success in the fall!
Read Every Day
Whether it’s a mystery novel, a graphic novel, or a nonfiction book about space, reading for just 20 minutes a day builds vocabulary, boosts comprehension, and sparks imagination. Visit your local library, sign up for a summer reading challenge, or create a cozy reading nook at home!
Keep Math Skills Sharp
Daily math doesn’t have to mean worksheets! Try measuring ingredients while baking, estimating change while shopping, or playing math games online. Even 10–15 minutes a day of math practice helps reinforce key skills and builds confidence.
Explore the Great Outdoors
Time in nature supports both physical and mental health. Go on a nature walk, plant a garden, or explore a local park. Observing bugs, birds, clouds, and trees can be the start of some amazing science conversations!
Try Something New
Summer is also a time to explore new interests—learn to cook, try a new sport, visit a museum, or take up a creative hobby. New experiences build curiosity, problem-solving, and resilience.
Let’s work together to make this a season of learning, growth, and discovery. We can’t wait to hear all about your adventures when we return in the fall!
