Celebrating Lutheran Schools Week: A Legacy Worth Honoring
by Sally Heit, Director of Marketing/Communication
This week, Hope School proudly celebrates Lutheran Schools Week—a time to recognize the lasting impact of Lutheran education across the country and to give thanks for the mission we share. It’s a legacy worth celebrating.
Lutheran schools have a long and meaningful history rooted in faith, access, and excellence in education. Martin Luther, the 16th-century German theologian best known for sparking the Protestant Reformation, strongly believed that all people should be taught to read. His translation of the Bible into German made it accessible and underscored his conviction that education and faith belong together.
Luther’s advocacy for Christian education laid the foundation for schools and influenced the establishment of Lutheran schools in the United States. Currently, there are more than 1,855 Lutheran schools worldwide, serving over 160,000 students from preschool through grade 12, including 9 universities, and supported by 21,000 dedicated teachers.
This week, we pause to give thanks for this rich heritage and to celebrate the success of Lutheran schools like Hope—places where students are known, faith is nurtured, and Christ-centered education continues to thrive for generations to come.
