Is it weird that I love Lent? By Kelsey Clark, PE and History teacher
Usually when I say that I love Lent, the response I get is confusion. Why would someone love a time marked by fasting, suffering, or denying oneself of the things we enjoy in the world? My answer comes from a friend of mine who described Lent as something else. She told me that from her perspective, when you give something up, you make space for something new. In acknowledging that something may take up too much space in life, it gives us the chance to reflect on the ways we can give more fully to God or make room for more of God’s perspective.
This does not always have to be a material thing. For example, fasting from negative comments can make space for more positivity and understanding. This year during the Lenten season, I have chosen to show restraint in my tendency to rush through a school day. My goal is to shift from focusing on to-do lists and what needs to be done next, to making the time to genuinely listen to students. In entering into a conversation with a second grader today, I learned about the snowman she built last night with her parents, the new bracelet she got with her dad at the mall that she is really excited about, and an idea she had to build an obstacle course competition for us to do in PE. I also took the time to play a short game of tag with the first and second graders at recess!
Moments like these where I intentionally make time to connect with the kids of Hope are part of why I love the time Lent provides us to empty what is not needed in order to make space for something else, and to view God’s world with a new perspective.
