Seaside Teacher Conference by Kristen Okabayashi, Hope Principal
Thank you so much to all of our Hope School parents for the time off in late October as 13 Hope staff members attended our annual teachers’ conference in Seaside, Oregon. One of the keynote speakers this year was George Couros, who spoke about helping our students develop an “Innovator’s Mindset”, based on his book of the same name. He led an energizing discussion of how we as educators can foster innovation, encourage critical thinking, and inspire creativity in our students by empowering them to wonder and explore.
In addition to the keynote speakers, teachers could choose from 21 different workshops throughout the course of the conference. Some favorite workshop topics included:
- Student-led parent/teacher conferences – our middle school teachers in particular were very inspired by this presentation, and we will consider if student-led conferences will be worth shifting to in the near future for middle school
- Coaching in Lutheran schools – this workshop included good tips for balancing leading a competitive team while also encouraging good sportsmanship, and general tools for organization athletic programs
- Growth Mindset – how can we encourage our students to be more resilient and flexible and look towards viewing mistakes and learning opportunities instead of failures?
In addition to the conference presentations and workshops, for the first time, awards were given to teachers and principals in recognition of jobs performed well. I was humbled and touched to receive the award for “Distinguished Principal of the Year” from our district. Our school is considered a leader in our district, and so I was very touched to be recognized for the hard work we have accomplished over the years. It is a reflection of our talented staff, along with our fantastic students and families, so you can all pat yourselves on the back for helping me receive it on behalf of Hope.
We always return from this conference energized and focused, which is a great feeling to have as we wrap up this fall season.
