Preschool Update by Christina Figgins, Preschool Teacher and Director
What’s happening in the Sea Star Class this year? Just like each year, we started off by getting to know each other, learning the rules and routine, and figuring out how to get along with others. And oh yes, this year we wear masks and social distance…in preschool! But, you’d be amazed how well these kiddos do with all this. They put on their own masks, they change them when they get wet, they use their “Eagle arms” to keep their distance in line, they wash their hands A LOT,” they use sanitizer…and of course they remind me of all these important protocols when I forget. They are rule followers in the best way!
Besides all that, we have been business as usual. Our current theme is Fire Safety. We have a fire station set up with fire hoses, phones to dial 911, and many many fire trucks. The imaginative play is wonderful, except for possibly the recurring siren sound effects. Out of all the fire safety tools we’ve learned, the favorite is “stop, drop and roll.” We practice this often, even when lining up to go outside. Always best to be safe!
One last very special thing that is happening in the Sea Star class is that we are becoming a family. As I observed the kids eating snack (and this is a special social time) I noticed the sweet bond that is forming. We have inside jokes, “Hey, my mom said, you better clean up your mixer truck!” And we all roar! The kids have invited me over to their house to play, once the germs are all gone from our world. And, when we pray, we all close our eyes and talk about how special it is to talk to God. The kids love to remind me how they were able to keep their eyes closed during the whole prayer, just like Mrs. Mueller taught us at chapel.
Yes, we have all taken some twists and turns this year; in the Sea Star classroom, we are right on track!
