The Gift of Reading Together by Leah Evjen-Bryan, Resource Specialist
Hands down, the favorite part of my day at school involves reading and being present with elementary students. When I am supporting a young reader, not only am I helping them to apply tools to decoding, I am helping them to gain new vocabulary, draw new connections, and increase their knowledge of the world.
For me, reading with students is an opportunity to practice mindfulness and presence. It sends the message that I value them as learners and people, and I value their learning process as well as what they have to say. Working with students helps them to increase their concentration and develops discipline and value the act of reading. Reading together can also help to reduce stress.
The simple act of reading with your child can be an oasis in the middle of our very busy and stressful lives. All of this leads me to conclude that the simple act of reading together with your child is ultimately the gift of presence.

SERVICE PROJECT SUPPORT
My name is Dominic Caudle and I am an 8th grader here at Hope Lutheran School. I am doing a service project to raise funds for Music4Life, a non profit dedicated to getting musical instruments into the hands of kids in need at various public schools throughout the greater Seattle area. I have started a GoFundMe page and the West Seattle School of Rock will offer opportunities to donate at their concert at the Hard Rock Cafe on March 25 from 2:00-4:00.
I am passionate about this because I’ve always loved music, and a lot of that was due to the people who were kind enough to donate instruments to me. Since the musical community was so kind to me, I wanted to give back. I would love it if you consider donating. Any amount will be greatly appreciated.
