Praise through Music By Erika Alba, 4th Grade Teacher
Last week, as part of our celebration of Lutheran Schools Week, students were introduced to Psalm 65:8, “Those who live at the ends of the earth stand in awe of your wonders. From where the sun rises to where it sets you inspire shouts of joy.”
As a class, fourth graders discussed the many wonders that our Lord has created and the many ways that we can “shout for joy.” Again and again, students reminded each other of the power of praise through music. As a member of the Hope Lutheran Church worship band and the staff leader of the middle school chapel worship band, this idea of praise through music is especially close to my heart. Psalm 28:7, “With my song I praise Him,” is not just a verse, but a practice that I live daily.
My love of music and more specifically praising the Lord and bringing others to Jesus through music, led me to form the middle school Chapel Worship Band last year. This group is composed of talented 5th-8th grade student musicians who meet weekly to learn, practice, and perform worship music for our school and even for the Hope Lutheran Church congregation.
Chapel Worship Band members learn how to play with other musicians in a band, read chord charts, sing vocal harmonies, set- up and tear down equipment for live performances, play to a click or metronome track, and more. Most importantly, students learn to lead others in worship. These are skills and life practices that band members can take with them long after they graduate from Hope Lutheran School.
As part of our kick off for Lutheran Schools Week, Chapel Worship Band was asked to lead worship music at church and chapel services this past week. Our talented worship band students, ages 10-13, led an entire congregation in worshipful praise through music. I am thankful for this gift of music!

SCHOOL NEWS
Student Council Update
Hope’s Student Council has been busy at work this year! They organized Treats for Troops and a Food Drive as service to our community. Student Council has also been raising money to fund projects for our school community and to the greater community. By helping pass out hot cocoa at the Night Market in December and selling Santa Grams, Student Council is making a $100 donation to Fred Hutch Cancer Center and a $100 donation to Mary’s Place. Some of those funds were also used to purchase treats for our students during Lutheran Schools Week. The remainder of the funds and any other funds raised this year, will go towards improvement projects on our Hope campus. Thank you for your support of Hope’s Student Council!
