Poetry in Second Grade By Elonna Visser, 2nd Grade Teacher
Early in the school year, 2nd grade started reading poems as we prepared for lunch. We enjoyed it so much, we are still doing it! One of our favorite poets is Jack Prelutsky. He often writes silly rhymes about things like singing dragons and flying hotdogs. One day we read a poem of his called, “A Noble Knight-at-Arms.”
In it, the vocabulary gets increasingly difficult. We came to a word I had never heard before: absquatulate. This was an opportunity to show students how, even as adults, we use the phonics principles they’re learning to sound out unfamiliar words! It also gave us a chance to practice our dictionary skills.
When we couldn’t find the word in our classroom dictionary, we looked online. And once we knew the meaning, we started absquatulating when we could. We absquatulated quite a bit those first few days. We still do occasionally, when the situation calls for it. One student even made up a new word – sasquatulate – which is, of course, when a sasquatch absquatulates.
This short time of daily poetry has unexpectedly reinforced so many phonics, grammar, and writing concepts we’ve learned, in addition to increasing our vocabularies. But most of all, it has shown us how much fun words can be. And in case you, like we, didn’t know the definition of absquatulate, it means to leave abruptly.
