Emergency Preparedness by Jennifer Neafcy, Kindergarten & Head Teacher
While we hope and pray that a significant emergency does not happen at Hope, one of our jobs as a school is to prepare for possible emergencies, including natural and man-made emergencies. This can be an emotionally draining process of thinking through different types of emergencies that could occur here at Hope and developing plans to address the emergencies.
Before moving to Seattle, I worked for a year on a grant in Texas that helped rural school districts develop and implement emergency procedures. To work on this grant, I was required to take a few courses through FEMA to better understand what to do in an emergency and how to work with first responders. My husband works in emergency management, so fortunately, I was also able to use him as a resource. Working on this grant gave me a better understanding of how schools, the community, and first responders can partner together for the safety of our staff, students, and their families.
Schools in Washington State are required to practice drills once a month. These drills include evacuation (fire), earthquake, shelter-in-place, and lockdown drills. Hope has procedures in place for each of these drills. Both school and church staff have a list of drill procedures so that staff and students will know what to do in the event of an emergency. Thanks to multiple grants and finding room in our budget, Hope was able to purchase emergency supplies for the school and the classrooms. Each classroom has a red emergency backpack and a lockdown kit filled with first aid supplies and other emergency items to be used if needed during an emergency. Hope has a supply of emergency food bars and water and individual kits of items such as survival blankets and waterproof ponchos.
This past summer, I was tasked with reviewing our emergency procedures and including them in a more comprehensive emergency operations plan. Regularly assessing and revising plans and protocols, delivering staff training, and practicing drills with students are important to make sure that we are ready in the event of an actual emergency. While we hope to never implement these plans, it puts my mind at ease that we have plans in place.

For the months of March and April, offerings will go to Heifer International. Heifer International is on a mission to end hunger and poverty in a sustainable way by supporting and investing alongside local farmers and their communities. It begins with a seed investment of livestock or agriculture, followed by mentorship to help project participants build a business, and ultimately gain access to supply chains and markets. Some of the livestock that can be purchased are heifers, goats, sheep, chicks, and honeybees. We have set a goal of $500 to purchase a heifer. Any additional offerings will be used to purchase additional animals.
