Technology News by Roger Davenport, Technology Director
With all of us relying on technology more and more during this pandemic. I wanted to mention a few things. The most important factor to remember about technology is patience. We have worked hard to try and give the teachers the tools to be able to teach the students, both remotely and in class. This has been a steep learning curve for our teachers as well as the students. As occurs with any new system, things don’t always go according to plan. I ask that you and your learners have patience with the teachers and the process.
Hope has just started using more of the Google Classroom offerings and this means that your child will have a @hopeseattle.org email address. Rest assured that we are monitoring the usage of these services to keep our students safe. We have restricted YouTube to “strict settings”; however, once the students leave our wireless network, those restrictions only work if they are signed in to their @hopeseattle.org accounts. We ask for your support in monitoring YouTube access while at home. We are not letting them use email at this time.
Knowing that the technology aspect of the current school year can be challenging, I want each of you to know that if you are having issues, need advice or help, please feel free to reach out to either your classroom teacher or via email to me directly. If your child needs a question answered they can also reach out to me via Schoology. Without trying to sound too cliché, we are all in this process together, so let’s make sure we practice patience and seek help when needed. I am happy to help however I can!

MAP Testing in October
During the month of October, your child will take a MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA® on their Hope iPads. We give students MAP Growth tests to determine their instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year (and from year to year) in math, reading and language (language in grades 3-8 only).
MAP Growth tests are unique in that they adapt to your child’s level of learning. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. This results in a detailed picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level. Since MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child’s learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly.
Each class will have a practice session to get used to this test, and students who are learning at home will also have a separate session to ensure all technology is working correctly. More information on this will come separately for virtual students.
We are truly excited to focus on your child’s individual growth and achievement. For more information about the MAP Growth test, visit: NWEA.org/Parent-Toolkit. If you have any questions, please let us know.
Picture Day Is Coming!
Picture day is just around the corner. Look for the flyer in the yellow envelope. Pictures will be taken on TWO different days: October 6th and October 15th. Only individual pictures of students will be taken; NO class photos at this time. Students may wear classy dress for their picture or their uniform, and are not required to wear a mask while taking their picture. Students will hold their mask while taking the picture; the mask will not show in the picture.
Please note the days your student will be taking their picture:
Tuesday, October 6th: Group A 5th-8th, In person K-4 & Preschool
Thursday, October 15th: Group B 5th-8th & ALL Virtual Students*
*Virtual students should plan to have their picture taken between 8:15 AM and 12 PM on October 15th. All students will go through Covid19 Screening before entering the building prior to getting their picture taken, and will be properly spaced out while waiting.
To order click here and enter Picture Day ID: EVTZP6FRR
We will need 1 more volunteer on October 6th and 1 volunteer on October 15th to help LifeTouch with getting classes to the picture location in the Commons and helping to keep the schedule. All volunteers will be screened in the morning. On October 6th the time frame will be from 8:15 am to approximately 2 pm and on October 15th, 8:15 am to 12 pm. PIP (Parent Involvement Hours) will be applied. Email Sally Heit at sheit@hopeseattle.org to volunteer.
