Yards of Hope by Irene Gehring, former Hope School teacher “Mrs. G.”
I grew up on a farm and plants have always been part of my life. I learned to HATE weeds! At five, I joined my family, hoeing weeds. I had the smallest hoe and was ALWAYS way behind everyone else. AND THEN, as I started First Grade in my Lutheran school, I learned about HEAVEN! WOW! I thought: NO WEEDS!!!! When I became a teenager my attitude about weeds changed when I realized I could wear a bathing suit and get a SUNTAN while hoeing in the fields.
I stay pretty well covered in the Hope yards and LOVE it all. These are God’s yards and I look forward to every day of work there.
My yardwork at Hope began as part of the Eve Garden Group. Elois Gruenhagen and I continue as the remaining Eves. We are a team ever since we both taught at Hope; Elois, Grade 1, me Grade 2. Elois plans, purchases, plants and pampers the plants. Elois knows the plants. I do the weeding; I know the weeds! (Recently Elois broke her shoulder. Please pray for her total healing. Thank you.)
There are several other people who work in the yards. If you see them, a word of thanks will keep them going forward, cheerfully.
MANY people stop by to talk and admire. They are my “Sidewalk Cheerleaders.” I especially have come to know students, teachers, and staff people of Hope. What a treat!
At my age I didn’t expect to be doing yardwork, BUT, God has blessed me. Therefore, I will do as much as I can, in spite of being allergic to bee stings and having a fractured vertebrae. God says, “My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Thank you, Lord!
Hope North: Building for the Next Generation:
For those families that were not able to attend our Vision event last Friday, we are including in your child’s Yellow envelope your campaign packet of information about the vision and expansion of Hope North. We hope you’ll be inspired and excited about what the future holds for our school and community. We also hope that you might take the time to consider and discuss how you want to be a part of this project. To that end, we have a video in addition to the capital campaign brochure that gives you an overview of what this campaign is all about. Save the date for Commitment Night, October 15th (more details to come) to turn in your commitment card and celebrate!

SCHOOL EVENTS
Fall Olympics
Fall Olympics is coming up this Friday, September 29 at 1:00 PM. Students should arrive at school dressed in their team color. If they are not sure which color is their color, you may check with your child’s teacher or the school office. For this spirited day, students may wear light face paint and/or washable hair spray if they choose (no full-face paint). Extra accessories in the team color are not necessary but are encouraged, such as colored necklaces, hairbands, bandanas, etc.
Students are mixed up into all different team with K-8 students together. Fall Olympic events include a 3 legged race, a slow bicycle race, a paper airplane toss, and many other events. One student per team has volunteered to participate in the slow bicycle race, so that person should come to school with a bike and helmet, which they can lock outside on the bike rack or inside the school lobby.

Chapel Offerings for September and October: Each week, when we gather for chapel, we collect a chapel offering. A small yellow offering envelope will be going home in the Tuesday Yellow Envelope today. Our chapel offerings are used to support ministries and those in need, locally and globally. Through the years, we have supported a child through Compassion International, Living Water, and missionaries that spread the word of Christ in other parts of the world. In early August, a catastrophic fire swept through Lahaina in Maui, where lives were lost, and many people lost their homes and businesses. Our chapel offerings for September and October will be designated for Maui Wildfire Relief through Emmanuel Lutheran Church and School in Lahaina and the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of the LCMS (Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod). Both Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the CNH District are using offerings to help support the needs of those in their community.

CHURCH EVENTS
Thursday Morning Bible Study: Every Good Gift begins October 5th. How natural is generosity to who you are? What do you do with what you have? Have you ever wondered what the Bible says about hospitality, generosity, and stewardship? Tethered to biblical accounts of giving as well as six personal stories from everyday women, this six-session series with author and speaker Ann Voskamp explores examples of offering hospitality, time, money, spiritual gifts, and empathy to the glory of God. Registration is open now.
